ABOUT THE ART
This illustration depicts a chart for the practice of palmistry, or chiromancy. Palm reading thrived in Renaissance Europe and worked on the premise that the geography of the hand could be read.
For instance, a “mountain” could be formed at the base of each digit, joined by “plains” and be read alongside a celestial map. Manuals of chiromancy circulated in manuscript from the fourteenth century and were printed in increasing numbers through the seventeenth century.
