ABOUT THE ART

The Unicorn Rests in a Garden (1495-1505) is part of a set of seven wall hangings known as "The Unicorn Tapestries" from the late Middle Ages. Woven in fine wool and silk with silver and gilded threads, the tapestries depict scenes associated with a hunt for the elusive, magical unicorn. However this textile may have been created as a single image outside of a set, as the unicorn is in a happy confinement among a pomegranate tree - a medieval symbol of fertility and marriage. The cartoon of this work originated in Paris, France and woven in the Southern Netherlands.
